Diagnoses environmental and food allergies
Skin tests are the reference diagnostic method in allergy. In a single session they identify the specific allergens behind the patient's symptoms, whether rhinitis, asthma, hives, atopic dermatitis or reactions to foods and medications. They are quick, safe and minimally invasive.
Types of skin tests
Skin prick test
The most widely used technique. Small drops of allergen extracts are placed on the forearm and the skin is lightly pricked under each one. A wheal at the prick site after 15–20 minutes indicates sensitization to that allergen. It is painless and results are read during the visit.
Intradermal test
A small amount of allergen is injected into the skin. It is more sensitive than the prick test and is used when the prick test is negative but clinical suspicion is high, especially for drug and insect venom allergy.
Patch test
Patches with different substances are applied to the back for 48 hours. Used to diagnose allergic contact dermatitis, it identifies sensitization to metals, preservatives, fragrances and other contact agents.

How to prepare for the test
Medications to stop
Stop antihistamines at least 5–7 days before (cetirizine, loratadine, fexofenadine). Some tricyclic antidepressants also interfere. Check with the specialist before stopping any medication.
On the day of the test
Come with a clean forearm, without creams or lotions. Wear short sleeves or sleeves that roll up easily. The full session takes about 45 minutes to an hour.
Does it hurt? No. The prick is superficial and feels like a light scratch. The main discomfort is temporary itching where the skin reacts, which goes away within minutes.
